Instructions
This project requires students to work in groups of 2-4 students. Each group shall submit a single report for grading. The report should make a simple table of members’ names, student IDs and their contributions on the report.
Assignment Description
Assume that the two organizations below want to installa direct multimedia communication link between them for the exchange of voice, data, images, text, etc.:
- CPA (Certified Practicing Accountants) located at 28 Freshwater Pl, Southbank, Melbourne VIC 3006 and
- Melbourne Institute Technology (MIT) located on La Trobe St VIC 3000 Melbourne.
The executives of the two organizations are unsure of which technology to use. You have thus been consulted as a telecom consultant to propose possible solutions (at least two) for consideration. Afterward, assume that you have been given the contract to design and implement one of the proposals.
Discuss the possibilities or all available options and substantiate why you chose the option that you have designed. All technical and economic details of the system should be documented in the report. The student should demonstrate the following key skills in their report:
- Technological understandings of the proposed solutions;
- Economic analysis and selection method of the design and;
- Application of engineering principle during design and implementation.
Marking criteria:
The marking criteria for this assignment are tabled below.
Section to be included in the report |
Description of the section |
Marks |
Technological understanding |
Does the report demonstrate the differences between available options and how one was selected? |
15 |
Economic analysis and budgeting of design |
Is the proposal affordable? Does the proposal include reflective economic analysis of telecom systems? Does the proposal include detailed financial budget for the components and overall system? |
15 |
Soundness of engineering |
Does the report contain sound engineering system design? Is the designed links workable? Is the link/path properly profiled and includes a comprehensive reflection of atmospheric effects on the performance of link? |
20 |
System engineering principles |
Does the report demonstrate sound knowledge of system engineering and how to make a system more reliable (incl. type of redundancies incorporated in the system) and efficient? |
20 |
Critical reflection |
Does the report demonstrate reflection and mastery of the topic or it contain copy-and-pastes? Does the report contain mathematical analysis (i.e. link budget, tower heights, site/path survey, operating frequency/environment)? |
10 |
Research depth |
Does the report demonstrate that the group consulted the relevant literature on the topic and used the IEEE referencing style well? |
10 |
Writing style, English grammar and coherence |
Is the report written in good English, good grammar, no typos, cohesive, admirable writing style, good format, etc.? Is the report not longer than the word limit? |
10 |
Plagiarism |
Did the student do any of these without reference and reflection?
